Prescribed mean curvature surfaces in 3-manifolds

The existence of embedded minimal disk for fixed null-homotopic Jordan curves in the boundary of mean convex 3-manifolds is one of the most important results in the theory of minimal surface. This talk will discuss some generalizations of this result via PDE methods or under boundary barrier assumptions. In particular, we solve Ilmanen’s conjecture on the topology of generalized apparent horizons in general relativity.
